Q: What is happening?

A: On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP. Microsoft will no longer offer security patches, system updates and support for the operating system.

Q: How will the Windows XP sunset affect my business?

A: While Windows XP will continue to function after the sunset date, any business that uses the operating system will face increased vulnerability to security breaches.

Likewise, MPS&A applications currently running on Windows XP will continue to function after the deadline, but they will face the same security risks as the XP operating system. Even though your workstation clients will no longer receive security patches during this migration, your server will continue to receive security patches where your data is stored and protected.

In summary, we recommend using Windows 7 Professional for all workstations, including POS registers.  If you choose to continue using Windows XP, be aware of the increased risks associated with security and compliance.

Q: What MPS&A products are affected by the Windows XP sunset?

A: EnterpriseRx, Pharmaserv, PharmacyRx, and POS registers are all affected if these systems are running on a Windows XP client workstation.

Q: What is MPS&A doing to address the Windows XP sunset?

A: If a customer uses McKesson-supplied hardware and/or software, MPS&A will continue to offer limited customer support for Windows XP-based systems and devices while we partner with our customers to upgrade their workstations and peripheral devices to the Windows 7 Professional operating system.

Q: When will the Windows 7 Professional operating system migration plan be ready?

A: MPS&A Account Managers have already begun processing orders for replacement hardware and/or upgrades for customers who use McKesson-supplied hardware and/or software.

Customers who supply their own hardware for their business will need to make their own arrangements to upgrade their system to Windows 7 Professional.

Q: How much will this upgrade cost?

A: Your MPS&A Account Manager can go over pricing options with you. Costs will depend on the number of Windows XP workstations and peripherals you use in your store.

Q: What is the risk to my workstation once Microsoft stops offering security patches for Windows XP?

A: Because your operating system will no longer be supported and will be vulnerable to security breaches, your workstation may fail internal and external audits, be subject to the suspension of certifications, and receive notifications of non-compliance.

In addition, PC software and hardware manufacturers will stop supporting the Windows XP operating system in new applications and PC models.
